Cindy Sherman was born in the year of 1954 in Glen Ridge, New Jersey. However, a few years after her birth, her parents took her and moved to reside in Huntington, Long Island. Sherman was not interested in the art industry as a child. At the State University College of Buffalo, Sherman first decided to study painting until she eventually got bored of it. Instead, she decided to take out her energy and thoughts into photography. Sherman had a different style when it came to photography. All the pictures that she took were pictures of herself. The images of herself came to be known as, “The Untitled Film Stills.”
Cindy Sherman’s main target was to display the roles of women during that time period. In her photographs, she displayed the female characters of a archetypal housewife, a prostitute, the actress and many more. These characters were important because during that period, there weren’t many choices for women to have. However, Sherman made sure that the viewers know that these characters weren’t actually her. She did so by naming the portraits, “Untitled” or by numbering them.

All of her paintings included pictures of naked women who generally had a heavy, dark and an emotional quality to them. Some of her most famous paintings were recognized by many people and were even taken into account when choosing a album cover. An example of this is shown when the Manic Street Preachers’ decided to use her painting as a cover for their album.
