Marely Fontanez
Art and Women
Semester Project

For my semester project I was influenced by Sherrie Levine to imitate Barbara Kruger's artwork and create my own.

Barbara Kruger, Untitled (I shop therefore I am), 1987
Barbara Kruger is and American artist who is known best for her layered photographs. In her work she uses black and white photographs that she finds in media such as magazines and she superimposes text over them. The slogans she places across the photographs make a comment about political and social issues. In her 1987 piece Untitled (I shop therefore I am) Kruger is making a comment about consumerism and how we let it define who we are as people. In our society our value as a person is often based upon or affected by what we buy. She uses the language of advertisement to call to the attention of her audience issues in our society. Her work challenges the audience and makes them question social and political ideas.

I created a tumblr page that features some of Barabara Kruger's artwork as well as the ones I have made. In my artwork I use her same style which includes the use of the black and white photographs, bold text, and the use of the color red.
