Post 4: 5 Contemporary Artists

Introduction:
Contemporary art is the art of today.  Art needs to be appreciated on a daily basis.  In order to make sure art is being appreciated, it is common for projects of art to try to be awarded for their significance and win awards to help show true appreciation for effort and creativity.  An award that is prestigious in the art world today is the Turner Prize.  It is named after J.M.W Turner, who was an innovative and controversial artist from back in his day.

The Turner Prize is an award to recognize an artist for an outstanding exhibition or other presentation in the preceding year.  In 1984, the prize started to be awarded.  The Turner Prize is open to anyone of any age, but requires that it is awarded to a British artist.  This prize comes with a prestigious honor and winnings of  25,000 euros to the winner.


Rachel Whiteread
Rachel Whiteread was the first woman to receive the Turner Prize in 1993.  She won the award with her project called "House" in 1993.  This project was completed in London's East End, located on Grove Road.  This road was actual partially damaged form the Second World War. It was constructed to represent a Victorian terraced style house.  The whole house was actually casted with concrete and later destroyed in 1994.

Gillian Wearing


Gillian Wearing won the award with a video called 60 minutes of Silence in 1997.  It showed an a group of policement and women interactions in the working relationship with public.  In the video, none of characters were able to speak, and stood silently for an hour.

Susan Philipsz

In 2010, Susan Philipsz won the Turner Prize in which she sang "folkorised" versions of the sea shanty "Lowlands Away".  She was the fourth woman to win the awardbut was the first person to win with a sound installation.  She used her own voice to to create sound installation which was innovating.

Elizabeth Price
In 2012 Elizabeth Price was awarded the 25,000 Euros prize.  She won it with a video called, "The Woolworths Choir of 1979". "She was named as a surpise winner for her video installations.  Price’s videos splice images, sound and text drawn from different genres, including advertising, pop videos, graphics and historical film. Each takes up to a year to create." (Singh)

Laure Prouvost
Laure Prouvost, "Wantee", 2013

She won the 2013 Turner Prize.   She actually was born in France and  It was the first time the prize was awarded outside of England.  It was awarded in Londonderry, Norhern Ireland.  Laure Prouvost won with a film installation, "Wantee", that ".. combined objects and drawings in evocative settings with an Instagram-like stream of film images". (Sulacas)  It was noted to bring together fact, fiction, art history and modern technology.
