Barbara Cummings
Art and Women
Proposal Semester Project

For my project, I spoke to a girls softball league (Blazin Youth Academy-newarkdiamonds.org) about speaking up and standing up for street violence!  They were at-risk girls that could be subject to harassment. I felt it was important for them to be a voice to speak for up for themselves in general.  I made this as a mentoring session on the softball field and I choose to educate girls on a social issue of Women Artist. but I presented them with an opportunity to know about Tatyana Fazlalizadeh. I felt her message would better relate to issue the girls in Newark. I spoke to the girls how they can too could be activists in the community as well. I told them how Tatyana was presented  with the bouts and controversy in her life. They were told how she dealt with issues of being a black educated artist as a women. I told them about the struggles and the Also the contrast that she had to live through as being a women activist.

They were given a back story on Tatyana Fazlalizadeh, born October 12, 1985  an American artist, activist, and freelance illustrator.   I felt because she is of black educated and Iranian the girls could see in a positive view. Being minority, artist and in living in Newark they could overcome and be an great artist if they chose to do so and use their voice to speak out against street violence. The girls were so impressed with knowing that an artist could be so versatile and in many ways to use their voices and talents.
Because Tatyana work  primarily an oil painter. I gained that youth attention ages 8-16 with the truth of how in  2012 Fazlalizadeh gained notoriety when she began to use street art to show how she spoke  out against the street harassment of women.  I told them how the past President Barack Obama was included in the book Art For Obama: Designing Manifest Hope and the Campaign for Change. Art For Obama: Designing Manifest Hope and the Campaign for Change is a 2009 art book dedicated to the United States presidency of Barack Obama. The book is edited by artist Shepard Fairey. (8)

From the harassment perspective  I want to display her Her poster campaign, Stop Telling Women To Smile, which has the The original Stop Telling Me To Smile posters were displayed in Fazlalizadeh neighborhood in Brooklyn, New York City.
I want to show how  the poster: Stop Telling Women to Smile is an art series by Tatyana Fazlalizadeh. Poster is an attempt to address gender based street harassment by placing drawn portraits of women, composed with captions that speak directly to offenders, outside in public spaces. (2)

The girls were shown pictures of pictures  in which women had different slogan that was based on Stop Telling Women to Smile. I was so impressed on the may question that came from them knowing that this was a is a street art project that addresses gender based street harassment.

Tatyana Fazlaizadeh-street watcher
explained to girls that Tatyana Fazlalizadeh was called street watcher. But I felt it was important for youth to understand harassment could could on many levels and ages. The girls continued to talk about bullying and how it seemed it was closely related. The girls then were asked to make a poster that related to the topic youth against street violence.  This inspired me to start a tumblr page where youth course use their voice to speak out against street violence.

Street harassment is a serious issue that affects women worldwide. This project takes women’s voices, and faces, and puts them in the street - creating a bold presence for women in an environment where they are so often made to feel uncomfortable and unsafe. (4)
