Feminism Takes Over
Organizing efforts by British and American artists emphasized social politics and took a stance to be included in the male-dominated art world. Female artists had to face backlash for provocative art, whereas male artists were given praise for their bold works. Questions were raised by women throughout the world on how they should showcase their art and work as female artists. Feminism developed internationally, creating a movement. This movement included radical artists that were not afraid to illustrate taboo topics. Through performance and video, feminist art spread out and became more diverse. Sexuality, class, race, and ethnicity mediated women's attempt to define the female experience and to understand one's subjectivity. Art transcended beyond visual pleasure and became a catalyst for social activism with many female artist using public space to bring awareness. Female artists were not afraid to step outside the canvas and present art in other physical forms.
