Dinner Party- Judy Chicago

Judy Chicago, The Dinner Party, 1974
During the visit to the Brooklyn Museum, what spotted the eyes of many was a huge center piece, The Dinner Party. This piece was created by a famous powerful artist, Judy Chicago. The Dinner Party is a message that stands for all women in history, it was also an icon in the 70’s. The idea of the Dinner Party is to honor women who stood against the norm of male patriarchy by creating plate set that is customized per female, also adding the names of other successful artist. Each plate was hand-made painted on china plates. Each plate rested on a sowed clothe that had their name. The table is a triangle which many
same that the shape represented equality between male and female.

The Dinner Party is extremely important because it is an icon that represents feminism. Also, what Chicago wanted to do is send the message that women are powerful as well and the social system does not define women and underestimates the abilities of females all over the world. The audience would understand her message completely because the females that are mentioned on each plate all share the same female strength. Therefore, people understand that the party is a party that celebrates females and their fight against the social standard. These females are known till this day and are taught in school to define the female power.

Many might find this offensive due to the vaginal paintings, however, what seems to be the issue is that main people compliment naked men and women being the subject in the pictures. Chicago wanted to push away that mindset in the Dinner Party, in fact she aimed to go against the old incorrect way of thinking. Going to the Dinner Party and looking at pictures online has a huge difference. The vibe alone while seeing the piece holds a greater emotion then just looking at it from online pictures. The Dinner Party has a deep meaning and not everyone can understand the meaning unless you have an understanding of the treatment of women throughout all history.

In art, the term inappropriate does not exist. However, because this piece is considered appropriate in many eyes is the reason to why people find this artwork offensive. The artwork made by Judy Chicago is not made to offend anyone, in fact she wanted to do the opposite of it. One can tell just based on the little details that she worked hard and put in a lot of effort and thought into it because women who fight for what they believe in a world like this, is a reason to celebrate. In fact, all women and men should celebrate the strength that any human regardless of gender.
