LORNA SIMPSON

Lorna Simpson is an award winning African American artist, born in Brooklyn New York, whose photography and films have been displayed internationally. She is most known for her portrayal of African American women in connection to contemporary society, exploring the limits of race, ethnicity and sex. Simpson's combination of photographs and text forces the audience to become aware of a topic we are all too comfortable ignoring-- People of color in society. Her engaging art pieces gained her the opportunity to be the first African American woman to have a solo show in the Museum of Modern Art's "Projects" series in 1990, along with other amazing recognitions. Lorna Simpson is an inspiration and her work opens a gate way into uncharted territory society is just beginning to explore.
