Paula Rego

January 26, 1935

Paula Rego is a female artist as an abstract painter from Portugal. Her story and paintings are different and rather interesting compared to other female artists. What fascinates me the most is her style of panting. Throughout her paintings, dark themes such as mystery, violence, revenge and feminism are always revealed. A majority of her paintings root from the issues of her early life. For instance, when Paula was eight years old she had a teacher, Dona Violetta, who was cruel toward her. Dona once placed a cup and saucer in front of Paula and ordered her to draw it. When she drew it, Dona said it was really bad and added : "You want to be an artist and you can’t even draw a cup and saucer." Ever since then, Dona has always appeared in Paula's art works as a grotesque female image. In this case, Paula uses painting as a form of subtle revenge, which i find to be uncommon in female artists yet it is very inspirational. Using that dark energy from experience to create something exotically brilliant is truly motivating.
