Art and women
prof. Cacoilo

JUDY CHICAGO born Judith cohen is an American feminist artist from Chicago Illinois known for her large collaborative art installation pieces which examine the role of women in history and culture. Chicago is considered one of the " first generation feminist artist " a group that also includes several female artists. Judy Chicago was part of the feminist art movement in Europe and the United States in the early 1970s to develop feminist writing and art. A movement that endeavored to reflect women's lives, call attention to women's roles as artists , and alter the conditions under which contemporary art was produced and received.
One of Judy's work I find really interesting is '' Lesbian triangle from the holocaust project ( 1989 ) ''. Judy Chicago led the way in artistically portraying sexual violence against women during the holocaust. In the first image i observed they're three men and two women sitting around a large table with drinks and cigars in front of them. I would assume they are at a fancy party or a bar. The Men look well dressed and wealthy. I see two men have their arms around the women sitting next to them trying to engage in a conversation, one of the men has his cellphone up in the air, not sure what he is doing but he has a grip around the women arm and starting deep in her eyes. The man standing looks lonley, maybe deep in his thoughts with cigarette in his mouth. The other man sitting down wearing a black suit is simply to himself looking straight forward while smoking a cigarette as well. My perspective of this image is men were in full control and had power over women. It seems like the men could do anything they wanted with the women without any consequences.Women had no choice but to live with the abuse and violations they received. Chicago's pioneering art about the sexual abuse of women is not only evocative of the brutality and violence that many women had to endure with their own bodies, but also represents the horrific experiences that may have been ignored or forgotten. ( Rochelle G. Saidel and Sonja M. Hedgepeth October 13, 2010 ).
In the second image, Judy Chicago stated she used her personal fear of rape.
Color is a prominent aspect of the second painting, the painting is filled with pain and anguish, expressed through colors. The first thing that caught my eye about this image was the people on the floor crying and holding each other hands. Three of the women have on a light blue dress with stripes and the others are naked. The room they are being held captive looks dark and cold. Their face expressions shows pain, loneliness and frustration. Judy Chicago wanted to draw the audience's attention immediately from the dark part of the painting and focus on the women in pain.
