When you say African American Woman, Artist- Black Culture, Entertainment, Community activist in Newark New Jersey you will hear the whispers of the name -Gladys Barker Grauer. She was born in Cincinnati, Ohio in1923. She moved to Newark New Jersey in the Clinton Hill in1951. She is a leader, mentor, teacher, and civil rights activist. In 1971 she launched Newark's first gallery called the Arad Studio Gallery, which is for professional African American artist to network, sell and display their artistic crafts. The Gallery display exhibits of the illustrious art of the past, energetic present and bright vision for the future. She is a voice to creatively express art through murals, social action, and political and personal views. Gladys Grauer has been called the "Mother" of Newark's African American artist in the community. She is an alumnus of the Art Institute of Chicago, founded the Clinton Hill Neighborhood Council, serves on Board of Boards of Theater of Universal Images. Her resume is so extensive and work is all over the world. For example some of Gladys Barker Grauer permanent collections are in Montclair, Morris, New Jersey State Museums, Washington DC, New York and London. As The Hahne & Company building -Rutgers Express Newark building opened on Hasley Street, January 2017- Gladys Barker Grauer has a curation on display on ground floor. My all time favorite is the mural in Clinton Hill Section called jazz scene. Gladys Barker Grauer is constantly inventing new forms and attacking new challenges as an artist. She the topic of discussion as being one of the queens of an artist-activist champion.
