TSCHABALALA SELF
Tschabalala is a primary example of one who produces art beyond her years. Born in the Bronx, New Yorker Tschabalala self is currently a New Haven based artist. At 26, Self uses various mediums of art in order to examine the black female's body. Self's work is a product of swatches of fabric, paintings, and canvas's. During the beginning of her career much of her inspiration stemmed from women found on magazine covers and albums. She used this in order to provide an outside perspective of how women were presented/depicted in contemporary culture.

The fabrics used in Self's artwork coincides with the tradition of women as well as womanhood opposed to the patriarchal system. Tschabalala hopes to relay important messages to her audience. She hopes to point out and correct the misconceptions projected upon the body of black women. She brings light to the collective fantasies surrounding the black body and how this has led to a false understanding of black femininity.
