Barbara Kruger
Barbara Kruger is an American artist known for her conceptual art that involves images and pictures showing huge, direct slogans towards certain topics. She was born in Newark, New Jersey and after college, worked at a magazine where she was quickly promoted. Her history with art design, and photography led to her quickly becoming the head designer for the magazine she worked at. Her pictures mainly deal with social constructions of power, identity and gender. She is famous for her black and white photography with bold red captions that clearly direct the audiences attention. The audience can quickly pick up the idea of her pictures because of how simple yet in your face they are. Kruger's work is often categorized as feminist postmodern.
What I found interesting about her art style is that even though the pictures are so simple, you can still feel the connection to it. I also liked how her pictures involved the words, "I, you, we" etc. because it makes the picture and the overall message more personal to the audience. It does not just affect her but everyone that is looking at her art. Her overlaying of black and white pictures with bright colors and a caption that is placed over it is very influential. There is no having to dig deep to figure out what each picture is about and that is something I liked about her work while looking at it. With some art, many people can get a different idea about what it is saying, with Kruger's every viewer that looks at it is getting the same message. Her powerful messages are great for the issues of power, gender and many others.
