"Lola Mora"

Dolores Candelaria Mora Vega, more commonly known as Lola Mora, was born on November 17, 1866 in El Tala of the Tucuman Province of Argentina.  She started her career with painting portraits, but eventually she obtained a scholarship from the Argentina government.  This led Mora to study abroad in Rome, Italy where she studied and worked along other fellow artists Costantino Barbella and Giulio Monteverde in the field of sculpting.  She eventually became well known for her sculptures of art and her sensual style.  In addition to her significance sense of style and sculptures, she was a pioneer and rebel.  This helped to shape the modern art society for women today.  Lola Mora was the first Argentine and South American sculptor.

La Fuente Monumental Las Nereidas (The Nereidas Fountain)  was created by Lola Mora for the capital of Argentina.  When the sculpture was first designed, it faced many problems and was "criticized for its sensual nudes".  It was moved place to place.  It is made of white Carrara marble and represents the nereids attending the birth of the goddess Venus.   It is currently located in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
